For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height— to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.
Paul is praying above for the Ephesian church that they may know the magnitude of God’s love for them. It’s so huge that it passes knowledge! We need to know this love too. Without an understanding of the unconditional love of God for us, we will always try to earn that which was freely given.
But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us.
1 John 4:10
In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
God demonstrated His great love for us through Jesus and He did this before we loved Him back!
1 John 4:8
He who does not love does not know God, for God is love.
God is love, it is His very nature and character! We can see what this means by reading the famous verses on love from 1 Corinthians 13 and replacing the word love with the word God.
1 Corinthians 13-4-8a [ “(God)” added]
