1 Corinthians 6:18
“I will be a Father to you, And you shall be My sons and daughters, Says the Lord Almighty.”
Who we are, our identity, determines how we act in any given situation. It is therefore critical that we have a true and clear understanding of who we are in the spirit. As with all things, we need to go to God and His Word to get an accurate picture of who we are. As we know, it is impossible for God to lie, what He says about us is therefore absolutely true and without exception. To think of ourselves as either less or more than God says, is the definition of pride!
If we think about taking a journey, to get to our destination with a specific set of instructions, our starting point must be correct. If I am mistaken on where I’m starting from, then even the best set of directions will result in me getting lost and not reaching my destination. If I have a wrong understanding of who I am and the authority God has given me, I will never reach the destination of enjoying all God’s promises.
For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.
But as many as received Him, to them He gave the right to become children of God, to those who believe in His name
We are sons and daughters of God. We are a member of God’s family and He is our Father. While we do serve with willing hearts in the family business, our identity is one of sons/daughters, not servants. A son/daughter is always welcome in the house but a servant is only allowed in the house while their employment lasts.
Therefore you are no longer a slave but a son, and if a son, then an heir of God through Christ.
The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and joint heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him, that we may also be glorified together.
Ladies, don’t be confused when the scripture refers to sons. We see in Galatians 3:27-29, that there is neither male nor female in Christ. If men can be the bride of Christ then woman are sons of God.
The idea is that as children of God, we inherit all the things of God. We are co-heirs with Jesus, everything He gets we get!
Let’s look at some of the things that are ours through Christ.
1- We have eternal life, which is assured, through faith in Jesus Christ. We don’t earn our way into heaven, it is a free gift from God through Jesus.
For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have everlasting life. For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world through Him might be saved.
For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast.
1 John 5:13-14
These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.
2- We are made righteous through Jesus. We are justified before God and we can boldly approach God for help at all times.
But now the righteousness of God apart from the law is revealed, being witnessed by the Law and the Prophets, even the righteousness of God, through faith in Jesus Christ, to all and on all who believe. For there is no difference; for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, being justified freely by His grace through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God set forth as a propitiation by His blood, through faith, to demonstrate His righteousness, because in His forbearance God had passed over the sins that were previously committed, to demonstrate at the present time His righteousness, that He might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
2 Corinthians 5:21
For He made Him who knew no sin to be sin for us, that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
3- We are a new creation, free from sin. The old us, the sinner is dead and a new us is now living inside of us. We no longer have the nature of the old man, the sinner but of the new man, the saint. We can now live out of our new sin free nature.
Therefore we were buried with Him through baptism into death, that just as Christ was raised from the dead by the glory of the Father, even so we also should walk in newness of life. For if we have been united together in the likeness of His death, certainly we also shall be in the likeness of His resurrection, knowing this, that our old man was crucified with Him, that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves of sin. For he who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we shall also live with Him,
2 Corinthians 5:17
Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
But you have not so learned Christ, if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus: that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts, and be renewed in the spirit of your mind, and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.
Let’s make sure we know our identity and all that God has given us. When we do, we will live lives of freedom and victory!
