Our minds are the battlefield

2 Corinthians 10:3-6
For though we walk in the flesh, we do not war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not carnal but mighty in God for pulling down strongholds, casting down arguments and every high thing that exalts itself against the knowledge of God, bringing every thought into captivity to the obedience of Christ, and being ready to punish all disobedience when your obedience is fulfilled.

After being born-again, we have a new reborn spirit, the old is passed away and we are a new creation. Our souls (mind, will & emotion)  however are in a process of renewal. This is why the Bible says, be transformed by the renewal of your mind and work out your salvation with fear and trembling. How we think will determine the course of our Christian lives, either in the spirit towards life or in the flesh (carnal thinking) towards death and destruction.

Romans 12:2
And do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.

Philippians 2:12-13
Therefore, my beloved, as you have always obeyed, not as in my presence only, but now much more in my absence, work out your own salvation with fear and trembling; for it is God who works in you both to will and to do for His good pleasure.

Romans 8:5-6
For those who live according to the flesh set their minds on the things of the flesh, but those who live according to the Spirit, the things of the Spirit. For to be carnally minded is death, but to be spiritually minded is life and peace.

Every action starts with a thought, you never did anything in your life without first conceiving it in your mind. This is the law of sowing and reaping at work, whatever seed of thought you allow to germinate in your mind with bring forth fruit (actions) according to it’s kind. You don’t get oranges from  planting apple seeds and you don’t get good actions by thinking on bad thoughts.

This is why the wording in 2 Corinthians 10:3-6 is so powerful. The imagery is of war, we are to pull down strongholds, cast down arguments and  take thoughts captive! A stronghold is an incorrect thought or collection of incorrect thoughts that are entrenched in our minds, they now form a part of our belief system but are causing bad fruit in our lives (often habitual sins).

God has provided His Word for us to overcome these strongholds and pull them down. Arguments and thoughts are the teachings of the world (influenced by the devil) that bombard us every day, through media, news, movies, friends etc. We are to cast them down before they can gain a hold in our minds and grow into strongholds.

James 1:13-15
Let no one say when he is tempted, “I am tempted by God”; for God cannot be tempted by evil, nor does He Himself tempt anyone. But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Then, when desire has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and sin, when it is full-grown, brings forth death.

Look at the progression in the verses above, first wrong desires (thoughts), give birth to sin, which gives birth to death. A wise man once says, “you can’t stop the birds (thoughts) from flying over your head but you can stop them from making nests in your hair (taking root in your mind)”.

Let’s realise where the battlefield is, it’s in our minds. Don’t be ignorant of spiritual things, but be wise; pull down the strongholds in your mind, cast down false arguments and take every thought captive, vetting them against the truth of the Word of God.
